About the English Language Requirement

Who Needs It?

Most visa applicants for settlement, citizenship, or certain work visas must prove their English language ability. Some nationalities are exempt (e.g. citizens of majority English-speaking countries).

A2 vs B1 Level

A2 is required for spouse/partner visas (initial application). B1 is required for settlement (ILR) and citizenship. B1 is more advanced and tests a wider range of skills.

Approved Tests

You must take an approved SELT from a recognised provider such as IELTS Life Skills (A1, A2, B1) or Trinity College London (GESE, ISE). Home Office maintains the approved list.
